Fiberglass vs. Steel Entry Doors: Which One Should You Choose?

Fiberglass or steel, which entry door material actually holds up best in Quebec? Here's an honest comparison.

Introduction

When it's time to replace your front door, the conversation almost always comes down to two materials: fiberglass and steel. Both are durable, both perform well in cold climates, and both are common choices across Montreal and the South Shore. But they're not interchangeable, each has real trade-offs worth understanding before you buy.

Steel Doors: Strength and Value

Steel entry doors are known for:

  • Security: steel is harder to force open than most other materials, which matters for a front-facing entry point.
  • Price: steel doors are generally the more budget-friendly option for a given size and insulation level.
  • Low maintenance: no refinishing needed, and modern coatings resist rust well.

The trade-off: steel can dent, and once the protective coating is compromised, rust can start. It also conducts cold more than fiberglass unless it's paired with a good thermal break and quality insulation core.

Fiberglass Doors: Durability and Design Flexibility

Fiberglass entry doors tend to win on:

  • Dent and warp resistance: fiberglass won't dent like steel or warp like wood, even after years of temperature swings.
  • Insulation performance: fiberglass has a naturally lower thermal conductivity than steel, which can translate into better energy efficiency at the door.
  • Finish options: many fiberglass doors are designed to mimic wood grain, giving you a higher-end look without wood's maintenance demands.

The trade-off: fiberglass doors typically cost more upfront than a comparable steel door.

How They Perform in a Quebec Winter

This is where the decision often gets made. Both materials can perform well, but only if paired with proper weatherstripping, a quality frame, and correct installation. A poorly installed steel or fiberglass door will underperform regardless of the material's rating. That said, fiberglass tends to be more forgiving of Quebec's freeze-thaw cycles over the long term, since it doesn't dent or corrode the way steel can if the coating is ever compromised.

Which One Is Right for You?

  • Choose steel if: budget is a top priority, you want maximum security, and you're comfortable with a simpler finish.
  • Choose fiberglass if: you want a look closer to real wood with less upkeep, or you're prioritizing long-term durability and energy performance in our climate, for most Montreal homes, this is where we steer people.

Either way, the material is only half the equation, proper sizing, sealing, and installation are what actually determine how the door performs over 10, 15, or 20 years.

The Bottom Line

Steel remains a smart, budget-friendly choice for side and utility entries. But for a primary front entry exposed to Quebec's freeze-thaw cycles, fiberglass is generally our top recommendation, it won't warp or crack the way wood can, holds its finish longer than steel, and gives you the best balance of performance, looks, and longevity. Because we manufacture both lines ourselves rather than reselling someone else's stock, we'll walk you through both options honestly, based on your home rather than a one-size-fits-all sale.

This is my first review, But after seeing what you guys did to my house. I had to leave a review!! I had left the house with my husband for 3 weeks as me and my friends went on Vacation.

Returning from my vacation i had noticed my husband had changed the windows and doors as a surprise. I'm usually superrrr picky when it comes to these type of renovations, because its rare for a company to give you good service, at a good price. But This definitely wasn't the case. I was super happy with the results! im blown away, the seals are super well done, the windows are heavy duty, and we didnt have to break our bank account! Thanks so much guys!

Will definitely be telling the girls about you!
